Abbie Fay (Lorette) Nikiforakis

Abbie Fay (Lorette) Nikiforakis 79 of Ashuelot, died at home peacefully on Friday in her sleep. She has left us to be with our lord .

She was born the daughter of Felix H. and Bessie J. (O'Brien) Lorette on May 27, 1929 in East Swanzey.

Mrs. Nikiforakis was previously married to Robert E. Duquette Sr. Who she had six children with. She later married James E. (Jimmy) Nikiforakis. They were married for forty years before he passed away.

Abbie and her late husband Jimmy were the owners and operators of the Ashuelot Restaurant. She retired from the family business in 1999. For the past 10 years Mrs. Nikiforakis could be found at the Hinsdale Walmart as your friendly, smiling greeter. She worked in this position until the day before she passed.

She was an avid yardsaler and loved to fish. She was also a people person and loved to be with them. Abbie was loved by many and will be missed by her family, friends and all who knew her at Walmart.

Mrs.  Nikiforakis is survived by her children. Robert E. Duquette  Jr. and his wife Joan of East Sutton, Sandra J. Foley and her husband Roger of West Swanzey, Janet L. Young and her friend Fran of West Minster, VT. Judy A. Duquette and her friend John of Fitzwilliam, Michel A. Duquette and his friend Sharon of West Swanzey, Nancy F. Davis and her husband Paul of Winchester and a Daughter In-law, Colleen A. Duquette. She is also survived by two of her twelve siblings, Carl and Raymond Lorette. She will be missed by her close friend Don Gardner of Bernardston, Ma. Abbie also leaves 17 Grandchildren and 19 Great Grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, cousins, close friends and extended family.

Calling hours will be held in the funeral home on Tuesday from 7 to 9pm. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at the Village Church 121 Cobble Hill Rd. West Swanzey on Wednesday at 2pm. With a reception to follow in the hall. Reverend Roger Brooks will officiate. Burial will be private. Judith A. (Littlefield) O'Leary

Judith A. (Littlefield) O'Leary 69 of Swanzey, died last Thursday at Cheshire Medical Center in Keene after a brief illness.

She was born the daughter of Bessie (Burgess) Prue on February 11, 1939 in Passadumkeag , ME. As a young child she was raised by her grandparents Fred and Leona Burgess and later by her mother and stepfather Howard Prue.

Judie attended local schools in Orono , ME and graduated from Orono High School class of 1957. She continued her education and received a Bachelor of Science in Business from the University of Maine .

On July 26, 1985 Judie married Dan O'Leary. They have been married for almost 22 years before she passed.

Mrs. O'Leary has lived in Swanzey for the past 8 years. She had worked at the University of New Hampshire as a purchasing agent and for the US Census Bureau prior to retirement. She lived in Richmond Heights , a suburb of Cleveland , OH prior to relocating locally.

She was an avid reader and in her spare time she enjoyed working in the garden bringing life and color to the flowers she planted. She also liked to knit and sew.

Judith is survived by her husband Dan O'Leary of Swanzey, two daughters, Olivia Stafford, nee Cheryl Ann Averill and her husband Lee Stafford of Thompson, OH; Kelly Lynne (Averill) Grondin and her husband Luke of Shapleigh, ME; and four grandchildren Jaime DuPont, Ian DuPont, Bryony DuPont, and Dane Grondin.

A celebration of life service will be held on Tuesday at 2 pm. in the funeral home. There are no calling hours. Burial will take place privately.

Margaret B. Shannon

Margaret “Peggy” B. (Brinckerhoff) Shannon, 82, of Winchester died at her home after a battle with chronic lung infections. She was surrounded by loved ones.

Peggy was born in Danbury , Ct. , November 23, 1925, daughter of Hebert & Margaret (Boughton) Brinckerhoff. She grew up in Redding , Ct and graduated from Danbury High School . In her high school days she played basketball and the trumpet in the high school band.

She graduated from Goddard College . In her twenties she spent winters in Vermont and the summers in Rhode Island . She enjoyed golf, which is how she met her husband Robert J. Shannon. They married January 17, 1959 and made their home in Sandy Hook , Ct.

Living in Sandy Hook, they raised their four children and owned a “package” store, “River's on the River”, which resided on Lake Zoar with a boat launch. Her extended families spent many happy years on this property. They also purchased a “camp” in Winchester where they made many friends and treasured memories for many years. She also enjoyed boating and snowmobiling.

Upon retirement Peggy and her husband Bob enjoyed traveling to Las Vegas , Aruba , attending the Olympic Games, going to the Kentucky Derby and other horse races until Bob's death in Aug. 1996. Peggy also made trips to Australia with her sister, Alaska with her daughter and daughter in-law and Hawaii with her sister and daughter.

In 1997 Peggy moved to Winchester to be closer to her daughter. Peggy was a loving mother and grandmother who enjoyed the grandkids, watching their sport activities and school achievements. She looked forward to when all the children and grandchildren would be at her home not only for visits and holidays but for the lobster fests. She will be greatly missed by her family.

Survivors include her daughter Margaret and her husband Scott Sharra of Winchester, three sons Jim Shannon and his fiancé Ronda Thompson of Winchester, Michael and his wife Patricia of Sandy Hook, Ct. and Robert of Constableville, NY., a sister Jane Pisapia of Winchester, two brothers Derek and his wife Hester of Santa Fe, NM and Herbert (Brink) and his wife Sandra of Old Saybrook, Ct., a sister in-law Shirley Glynn of Sandy Hook, Ct. Her grandchildren, Brooke, Chris & Jordan Sharra of Winchester, James & Andrew Shannon of Winchester and Michael & Matthew Shannon of Sandy Hook, Ct. and 5 nieces.

Services will be held at the Cheshire Family Funeral Home on Monday at 7pm.Calling hours will be from 5 to 7pm. prior to the service. Additional calling hours will be held at the Honan Funeral Home, Newtown , Ct. on Tuesday from 5 to 8 pm. with a graveside service to take place on Wednesday at 10am in St. Rose Cemetery , Sandy Hook , Ct.

Maureen Frances (McGrath) Murphy

Maureen Frances (McGrath) Murphy - 59 passed away peacefully on June 17 at her home in West Swanzey surrounded by family.

She is survived by her husband, Michael J. Murphy and her five children: Christopher Shorrock of Winthrop , MA ; Kimberly Shorrock of Salem , NH ; Julianne Irving of Kingston , NH ; Sean Murphy of Swanzey , NH ; Ryan Murphy of Swanzey , NH and her five grandchildren.

Maureen was born and raised in Revere , MA . She lived in Revere for nearly 50 years and spent her final years residing in Swanzey , NH . Her family will be having a private memorial service at their home.

Priscilla L. (Beaudoin) Richardson

Priscilla L. (Beaudoin) Richardson , 87, of Marlborough , died June 12, 2008, at home with her daughters and son-in-law at her side after a lengthy illness.

She was born in Marlborough Dec.6, 1920, the daughter of Alfred and Irene (Annala) Beaudoin. She graduated from Marlborough High School class of 1938 and was the secretary of her senior class. For two summers after high school she attended the Jacob's Pillow Dance Center in Lee , MA , working with Ted Shawn and Ruth St. Denis. On Aug. 9, 1942, she married Clifford E. “Bud” Richardson, Jr. in Marlborough . They were married for 36 years before he died on April 10, 1979.

Throughout her life she was a student, performer, choreographer and teacher of dance. For 53 years, she taught many styles of dance to children and adults in Marlborough , Keene and Troy . She was a leader in fostering the appreciation of liturgical dance. As an active member of the Sacred Dance Guild, she was the Sacred Dance Choir Director at the Federated Church of Marlborough for 50 years. She also ran a kindergarten in town for 12 years.

Priscilla was an avid local historian. She was a charter member of the Marlborough Historical Society and served at various times as the Director, Secretary, Artifact Chair and Program Chair. She contributed many articles on local history to the Marlborough Bulletin and published a chronology (1752 - 1995) of Marlborough Town History. She researched and published treatises on the history of local Finnish and French populations. One of her projects involved taping oral histories by interviewing elderly citizens and photographing older townspeople and historic buildings. She was a member of the first heritage commission and co-chaired the Citizens' Committee to save and restore the first wood frame house in town, now the Gates House Museum . For 7 years she was the Marlborough correspondent for the Keene Sentinel and contributed many feature articles.

Priscilla was a lifelong member of the Federated Church of Marlborough. As a child, she was active in Sunday School , choir and youth groups. As an adult, she taught Sunday School as well as liturgical dance. Chairing several different committees at various times, she was on the board of directors for decades. Her Altar Guild membership involved arranging flowers in the church for Sunday service and then bringing them to shut-ins or individuals either celebrating happy events or enduring illness or bereavement. Until her health failed, she was church archivist.

In November of 2007, Priscilla was the recipient of the Marlborough Interfaith Humanitarian Award, honoring her unflagging commitment to community service. She was active in the PTA and the MHS Alumni Association. While her children were growing up, she worked with Cub Scouts and 4-H, teaching astronomy and photography. She organized a group of women who met to discuss books and town affairs. For 5 years, she was chair of the planning board, helping to rewrite the zoning ordinances and develop the first town plan. She was secretary of the board of adjustment for 10 years. Other projects involved acting as Big Sister to a deaf girl and teaching English to Cambodian refugees who had relocated to this area.

Priscilla's hobbies included gardening, carpentry, sewing, reading non-fiction, biographies and murder mysteries, photography and traveling throughout North America and Europe , exploring museums, historical and natural landmarks and public gardens. She was happiest when she was on Great Cranberry Island off the coast of Maine , enjoying the ocean, mountains and local culture.

Survivors include her son, Clifford E. “Rich” Richardson, III and his wife Sandra P. (Asciolla) of Albuquerque, NM, her daughters, Amy I. Richardson and her husband Stephen Mathew and Christina P. Richardson, all of Marlborough, her son-in-law David Vowell of North Carolina, her sister, Phyllis “Dolly” Parker and her husband Roland of Keene, her sister-in-law, Pauline Beaudoin of Keene, her ‘adopted granddaughters' Natasha and Nikita Mathew and their parents Mathew and Annie Mathew of San Diego, CA and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

Her parents, a brother Winston “Bud” Beaudoin, a sister Joanne C. Beaudoin, her husband, her infant son Ian Charles and her daughter Noelle Richardson all died earlier.

A memorial service will be held on June 21, 2008 at 2 PM at the Federated Church , 16 Pleasant St. , Marlborough . Pastor Marilyn Ayer will officiate. A reception will follow at the Community House on Main St . There are no calling hours. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

The family has requested that, in lieu of flowers, contributions be made in Mrs. Richardson's memory to: The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Donor Services, PO Box 4072 , Pittsfield , MA 01202 , or The Federated Church of Marlborough, 16 Pleasant St. , Marlborough , NH 03455 .

 

Brian Alec Polaski

Brian Alec Polaski 25 of Winchester died at Dartmouth-Cheshire Medical Center in Keene late Saturday night after injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Mr. Polaski was born on August 29, 1982 the son of Joseph and Doreen (Molly ((Cofske) in Brattleboro, Vermont. He has lived in Winchester all of his life attending local schools and Thayer High School.

Brian worked for the past 3 years for the W.R. Painting Company in Ashuelot as a painter.

Brian had many interests. He loved to play darts and horse shoes. Mud bogging and four wheeling was a way to explore and have fun. He was an avid hot wheels collector. This hobby started as a little boy and he still colleted them as an adult.  Not only did he like little cars but he had a love affair with Ford Mustangs. It didn't matter what year they were he liked them all. Brian also enjoyed car shows and family time.

Mr. Polaski is survived by his mother Molly (Cofske) and her husband Mark Olson a  sister, Alicia M. Raymond all of Orange, MA. Two brothers, James and Jason Cameron of Las Vegas, Nevada. His grandparents, Rana Polaski of Winchester and Janet and Joseph Cofske of Holton, ME. He also leaves his two children, Darian  and Dylan Morse ages 6 and 13 both at home and their mother, who Brian was going to marry Ms. Tricia L. Merrifield all of Winchester. There are many cousins, uncles and aunts who will miss Brian's presence. Brian will be re-united in death with his father, the late Joseph Polaski who passed away in April of  2000 and his long time friend Josh Bradley.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Friday at 10am. Burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery, Winchester. Calling hours will be on Thursday from 5 to 8pm. All in the funeral home. William George Jutras

William George Jutras 66 of Winchester died on Friday evening in his home with his four boys and extended family at his side. Bill's passing came after a period of illness. He died knowing that he will be missed and was loved.

Mr. Jutras was born the son of George A. and Muriel (Harris) Jutras in Westport on September 1, 1941.When Bill was quite young he lost his mother and his father later married Doris Jutras who became his mother and role model.  He was educated in local schools and attended Thayer High School.

Bill worked as a foreman for Paper Services Limited in Ashuelot. He was a long time employee until the flood of 2006 that destroyed a large part of the plant. Bill retired at that point after 49 years of loyal service. He was also a part time vegetable gardener and the owner of the red vegetable stand on Rt. 10, Keene Rd .in Winchester for many years.

He was not a very religious man but had faith that there was more to life. He was also a man who never yelled and spoke volumes of wisdom with out being critical of others. It was common for Bill to place his arms around you and give hugs, he was also very kind hearted. His boys will miss this part about there dad. Bill had many family events and get together's at his home. He was an avid poker player and played pool for the Busch Pool League. It was common to see Bill playing pool with the guys at the Elks Club in Keene. The Eagles played a part in his life. He enjoyed the comradery that this group had and was an active member for many years. Fishing and hunting became a family event with the boys. They will cherish those memories.

Mr. Jutras is survived by his four sons George W. Jutras and his wife Joanne of Winchester, Norman W. Jutras and his wife Ellie of Manchester, Chris E. Jutras ans his wife Tammy of Dublin and Steven K. Jutras of Manchester. Bill leaves 2 siblings,  Jerry (Jutras) and her husband Robert Nimms of Hubbardston, Ma., and Alice Jutras of Winchester. Bill loved all seven of his grandchildren: Nichole, Joey, Eric, Emily, Ryan, Ashlie and Christina Jutras. He also leaves nieces and nephews. They will miss grandpa.

Calling hours will be held on Wednesday evening from 6 to 8pm. in the funeral home. A ceremony performed by the Fraternal Order of Eagles will be held at 7pm. Burial will be private. Mildred (Millie) L. Manning-Horton

Mildred (Millie) L. Manning-Horton 97 of Swanzey died on May 27th. at Dartmouth-Cheshire Medical Center after a period of decline.

She was born the daughter of Joseph and Ada (Winn) Guyette on January 31, 1911 in the town of Weston, Vermont. She was educated in the Keene School system and graduated from
Keene High School in 1929.

On August 26th. 1930 She married Donald C. Manning. They were together for 40 years before he passed in August of 1970. Millie was fortunate enough to find love once again and took vows to marry Alton Horton in 1987. They were married for only a short time before he passed.

Millie liked to work. She was employed by Markems Printing Ink Company as a product finisher in the mailing department. She worked for 17 years before she retired in 1973.

As a long time resident of Cheshire County she has experienced more than most will ever imagine. She was fortunate enough to live a long and fruitful life with little regret. She loved to knit but her priority in life was family. Nothing got in the way of making sure the family was safe and cohesive.

Mildred was a proud mother and is survived by  Beverly Hellested of RI., David Manning of Westport, Jackie Taylor of Winchester and Sally Horton of NC. She is also pre-deceased by 2 children, Donald Manning and George Horton who died in 1986. She is also pre-deceased by 3 brothers Joseph Guyette who died in WWII, Richard and Donald Guyette all formerly of Westport. She was the elated grandmother of 16 and 37 Great Grandchildren.

A grave side service will take place at Evergreen Cemetery in Winchester on June 21st. at 11am. with a reception to follow immediately at the United Church of Winchester. There are no calling hours. At the request of the family, they would like donations to be made in the name of  Mildred Manning-Horton to the charity of ones choice.

Rhonda Jean (Ward) Frazier

Rhonda Jean (Ward) Frazier 46 of West Swanzey died at home in familiar surroundings with the love and compassion of her family at her side. She passed peacefully after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

She was born the daughter of Robert and Jane (Jantti) Ward on June 30, 1961 in Keene. Rhonda was educated in the Monadnock Regional School System.

On February 3, 1990 Rhonda took the hand of Lawrence R. Frazier Jr. It was a simple wedding ceremony at  the Westport Sportsmen Club amongst close friends and family. There friendship, love and admiration for each other grew stronger each year. They were married for 18 years before Rhonda passed.

Mrs. Frazier was employed by the Ready for Kits by Comfort Gear Company. She loved to go to work, being with friends and good people. Rhonda was an assembler and fill in supervisor. The environment at work made her happy to get up and be the first one in the door. Rhonda has worked there for 4 years.

There was more to Rhonda than meets the eye. She was a small woman but full of life. She enjoyed flower gardens, traveling, and camping. She loved to get videos from the store and watch movies at home. She also loved to cook. Family was her priority, she would hold cookouts and have family birthday parties at the house. Rhonda's children will best remember there mom as being a very compassionate and understanding person who had many friends. Rhonda will be missed by all. She had 3 special friends who helped her during her time of need. Cheryl Champney, Andrea LaValley and Cindy LaPlante.

Rhonda is survived by her husband, Lawrence (Larry) R. Frazier Jr. of West Swanzey, four children; Eric and Trevor of West Swanzey, Ryan of Somerville, MA. and Lawrence Frazier III and his wife Jenn of Littleton, NH. Her parents; Robert and Jane (Jantti) Ward of North Swanzey. She also leaves 3 siblings; Tammy Buckley of Hillsborough, Dawn Ward of Keene and Brian Ward and his wife Kathy of West Swanzey. Rhonda will be re-united in death with her brother Robert Ward Jr. who passed on April 26. 1997. Her Grandmother Blanche Jantti of West Swanzey. Rhonda was the proud grandmother of 4 Jayden, Kyle, Dylan and Zachary Frazier. She also leaves many nieces, nephews, uncles and aunts.

Funeral services will be held on Monday at 10:00am. with burial in Mtn. View Cemetery Rt. 32 S. Swanzey Center. Calling hours will be on Sunday from 5 to 8pm. All services will take place at Cheshire Family Funeral Home, 46 S. Winchester St., W. Swanzey. Flowers will gladly be accepted, however the family has requested that donations be made in the name of Rhonda J. Frazier to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Jason Scott Marrer 24 of Holderness died on May, 11th., after injuries sustained in a tragic automobile accident.

He was born the son of Michael A. and Lorraine G. (LaFontaine) Marrer on March 14th. 1984 in
Keene. He spent part of his youth in Campton and attended Plymouth schools. He also took studies locally at Monadnock Regional High School and attended Thayer High School in Winchester.

He worked as a roofer for the Skyline Roofing and Walter Demolition Company. Located in Manchester.

As a young boy he enjoyed playing football in the Pop Warner League in Plymouth. He also enjoyed being on the wrestling team in Compton. Fishing and four wheeling was a way to escape
and have fun. Mr. Marrer was also very artistic, he would draw and write poetry in his spare time. Of all the joys in life, he loved his little brother. Jason Idolized him and would always make sure he was a prominent part of his life.

Jason is survived by his father Michael of Compton, his mother, Lorraine of Winchester, his only brother Shane M. Marrer of Holderness. He also leaves both of his grandmothers; Mary Jane (Stafford) Marrer and Glenda (Plankey) LaFontaine of Keene. Jason leaves his girlfriend, Ms. Krystal V. Rogers of Rumney. He will be missed by his numerous Uncles, Aunts and Cousins.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday at 1pm. In the sanctuary of Cheshire Family Funeral Home, 46 S. Winchester St. W. Swanzey. All who knew Jason or wish to support the family are invited to attend.

Reginald S. (Reggie) Farnum

Reginald S. (Reggie) Farnum 77 of Winchester died on Sunday Evening with the presence of his family and in familiar surroundings after a long illness.

Mr. Farnum was born in Grafton, VT. The son of Harry and Beatrice (Tuttle) Farnum on December 28th. 1930. Reggie as most called him was educated in the Grafton local school system.
As with many of his generation he left school in the eighth grade to help the family.

On August 20th. 1955 he married Barbara Jane (Pratt) in the United Church of Winchester. They have been married for 56 years.

Reggie was employed by Paper Services of Ashuelot as a Beater man. His employment ran for ten years Before he retired in 1996. Prior to that he was employed by the Ashuelot Paper Company for 11 yrs. In a similar role.

Reggie had many interests. He was an amateur mechanic, fisherman, bird watcher, gardener. He also enjoyed chewing the fat at Hillocks Auto with the boys. Reminiscing about old times and telling fish stories. Some of his most memorable times were planting potatoes with the grandchildren. This was a time to get a little bit of labor out of the kids and also teach them about gardening while bonding with them also. He liked to take car trips to Vermont. Packing up the car on Sunday and hitting the road made for fun family memories. Volunteer Firefighting for the Town of Winchester was a civic duty he felt he needed to fulfill. He was a volunteer for 20 years.

Reginald leaves his wife Barbara J. (Pratt) Farnum of Winchester. He also leaves 4 children. Patricia Ann Tulley and her Husband Hinkley of Spofford, Judy Lynn Lancey and ger husband Al of Winchester and Gordon K. Farnum and his wife Catherine of Winchester. Reggie will be re-united in death with his daughter Debra J. Farnum who passed at birth in 1956. He also leaves Six brothers and sisters, Micheal and Ruth Farnum of Winchester, Zelma Hillock of Richmond, Marion Black of Keene, Viola Fish of Keene, Ellen Coyle of Keene and Mac Tibbits of Swanzey. Reggie is predeceased by five other siblings, Henry, Ivan, Gardell and Cortez Farnum and Lorraine Martin. The 13 grandchildren and 14 Great grandchildren will miss grandpa.

Caryl Elizabeth (Smith) Thurston

Caryl Elizabeth (Smith) Thurston 78 of West Swanzey died on Friday afternoon at home in the presence of her son and daughter in-law. She passed peacefully and with grace. She was well loved by her extended family and was able to say goodbye to all before passing on.

Mrs. Thurston was born the daughter of Gordon F. and Helen E. (Hildreth) Smith on February 22nd. 1930 in Brattleboro Vermont. She attended schools locally and was a 1948 graduate of Brattleboro High School.

As a young woman, she was gainfully employed at the Center for International Living. She later became an Office Manager for the John Hancock Insurance Company. Caryl worked diligently in this position for 30 years before retiring in 1987.

She  moved to the Cheshire County area  in 1964 and has lived in West Swanzey for 34 years. On December 12th. 1969 she married Zane B. Thurston in Marlborough.  They were married for 12 years before he died.

Caryl was a child of the depression so her values were of simple needs. She loved to be with friends and family. A visit to the beach, scouring antique shops, spending time in the garden. These were things that made her happy. She was a strong and independent woman who didn't mind trying to do things on her own. She enjoyed the challenge of completing the New York Times crossword puzzles and kayaking in her spare time. It was common to hear Neil Diamond playing at the house. She would listen to his music for hours. Hers was no ordinary life; she was a beloved bright star, always a shining presence and that presence will be missed by all with whom she shared her life.

Caryl is pre-deceased by her parents. She is survived by a son, Craig Philip Palmer and his wife Janet of Scotia, NY. One sister Sylvia (Smith) Morse and her husband Robert of Guilford, VT. Two granddaughters: Jennifer Gazda and Alison Post both of Charlotte, NC. Other close survivors include: Sheila Morse of Guilford, VT, Dale Morse and her husband John Salvatti of Wellesley, MA, Claire Griffith and her husband Richard of Pomfret, CT, Paul Morse and his wife Karen of Cambridge, MA and Charles Morse and his wife Monica of Guilford, VT. Many grand-nieces and nephews. Three great-grandchildren and members of the Thurston family.

There are no calling hours. A celebration of life service will be held on Sunday the 8th. of June at 10:00am. Followed by burial at Oak Hill Cemetery in West Swanzey. Katherine C. (Paci) Cusato 80 of Gilsum Died at Genesis Nursing and Rehabilitative Care Center in Keene with the love and devotion of her family at her side. She passed peacefully after a period of failing health.

Katherine was born the daughter of Italian immigrants on November 27, 1927 in Brooklyn, New York. She was educated in local schools and graduated from Brooklyn High School in 1945.

In 1963 she married Anthony Cusato. They were married for 22 years before he passed on August 16th. 1985       .

Katherine was gainfully employed by the Muscular Dystrophy Association as a secretary for Jerry Lewis. She worked for Mr. Lewis for ten years. Katherine was also employed by the Holsom Bread Company as a store manager for eight years.

Mrs. Cusato lived in Florida for many years until 2006. She moved to Gilsum to be closer to her family. She loved flower gardens and planted many over the years. She also enjoyed reading, knitting and bingo. Her passion was cooking. The type people would go out of their way for. You always knew when Katherine was cooking. You could smell the aroma of spices from outside. She will best be known as a friend to all. The door was always open for friends and family.

Katherine was the proud mother of three. She is survived by Robert and his wife Diane Charney whom she lived with in Gilsum. She is also survived by one brother. Joseph Paci of Pompano, FL. G-Ma as the grand kids called her will remember her with fond memories. She leaves nine: Robert Charney Jr. and his wife Rene of Tamarack FL., Anthony Charney of Germany, Casandra Charney of Gilsum, Alexandria Cusato of Tamarack FL., Michael Cusato of Hillsborough, FL., Jacqueline Charney of Gilsum, Alex Cintron of Ocala, FL., Michael Cusato Jr. Of Ocala, FL., Brieanne Charney of Gilsum.  Not all in death is sad. She will be re-united with her two other children William Charney and Michael Cusato who passed earlier.

There are no services locally. A private burial service will take place in Florida. The family has asked that donations be made in Katherine's name to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, National Quarters, 3300 East Sunrise Dr., Tucson, AZ. 85718.

Dolly Jean (Hathaway) Gallien


Dolly Jean (Hathaway) Gallien 78 died on Friday, May 9th. at Concord Hospital after a period of decline.

Dolly was born on September 9th. 1929 the daughter of Dwayne and Francis (Costello) Hathaway in Plattsburg, NY. She was raised in Athol, Ma. and attended local schools Graduating from Athol High School.

Ms. Gallien raised four children and lived in the Keene area for many years. While raising her children she worked as a secretary at Spofford Hall for 10 years. She was also employed by the Keene Clinic in a similar role for over 15 years. She spent her later years in Claremont also working as the secretary for the Mary Phillips Apartments a subsidiary of the Housing Authority of Claremont.

She was passionate about people. Especially her family and friends. The grandchildren made her life special. She loved to be around them and they loved to be with her. Anyone who knew Dolly could feel her warmth and compassion. Dolly also enjoyed old movies and musicals. Later in life she developed an interest in painting. She also loved to spend time at the beach. For many years she had 2 constant companions: Molly the Toy Poodle and don't forget Frankie the Fish.

Dolly is survived by her children. Paul R. Gallien of Lake Tahoe, CA, Brian J. Gallien and his wife Cheryl of Marlow, Annette J. Delaney of Claremont and Cheryl A. Gallien of Keene. She also leaves a sister. Tammy and her husband Elmer St. Laurent of Orange, Ma. and she is predeceased by one brother. The late Sonny Hathaway who passed earlier in Texas. She will be missed by her seven grandchildren: Ethan and Cale Delaney, Joseph Gallien, Lakeisha Delaney, Miles and Brandon Rainey, and Shawn Hathaway. She was also fortunate enough to have a great-grandchild, Tyler Delaney. Her longtime and devoted companion Bill Pryce will also miss Dolly's presence.

William James Fulton Sr.

William James Fulton Sr. (Jim) 93 of Winchester died peacefully on Friday while taking an afternoon nap.

He was born in Johnstown PA., on March 22nd. 1915 the only son of Alfred and Sarah (Johnston) Fulton. He was educated and graduated from the Johnstown school system.

Jim was an electrician by trade and was the owner of W.J. Fulton Electrical Contracting. He owned and operated the business in Johnstown PA. for over ten years. He later moved to Hastings on Hudson NY. In 1958 and worked as an electrical estimator for numerous companies. Jim also worked as a project manager during that time. When time permitted Mr. Fulton tested and evaluated new tools for companies like Black and Decker. He wrote reviews for the equipment and critiqued them for quality and application. He also lived in Redhook, NY. for over 20 years.

Mr. Fulton wrote for five years for CEE Magazine. He was also a committee member for the United Methodist Church of Redhook, NY. After he retired he became an avid woodworker and amateur carpenter designing and producing chairs, tables and numerous household furnishings. Music was important to him in his younger years. He played the Violin and Sousaphone this is where he met his future wife..

On September 25th. 1940 he took vows to marry Dorothy  V. Seaman at St. Joseph's Church in Johnstown, PA. They were married for 66 years before she passed in December of 2006.

Mr. Fulton also leaves behind two children. William James Fulton Jr. (Jim) and his wife June of Stokesdale, NC. and a daughter Judith P. LeBlanc of Winchester, NH. He leaves Seven Grandchildren: John Morelli of Bourney, TX., Paul Morelli of Athens TX., Christine Grimes of North Attleboro, MA., Trey and Timothy Morelli of Keene, NH., Cathy Roberts of Oak Ridge, NC., and Jamie Fulton of Greensboro, NC. Jim will be re-united in death with a granddaughter, Antoinette Morelli who passed in 1971 and his only sister Eleanor Prohovic who died in February of 1998. He also leaves 13 Great Grandchildren.

Services will be on Thursday at 10am. A period of calling will be from 9 to 10 at the funeral home. Burial will follow immediately in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Keene, NH. Richard L. (Smokey) Vollert Jr.

Richard L. (Smokey) Vollert Jr. 76 Died late Saturday morning peacefully after a period of decline while at  home in Winchester.  His wife Donna and family were with him as he passed with there love and devotion. He lived previously in Southampton, MA. for 56 yrs.

Richard was born in Holyoke, Massachusetts on January 12th. 1932 the only son of Richard L. and Eleanore A (Stueber) Vollert. Smokey  graduated in 1950 from Smith Vocational High School in Northampton,  MA.

After High School Rich went to work for United Technologies where he climbed the ladder form the entry level position he accepted to a senior manager when he retired in 1990. Richard was the manager of research and development for aircraft design. He was employed by United Technologies for 40 years. Richard loved to go to work and be part of team that strived for perfection.

Mr. Vollert was a long time bachelor. This gave him the opportunity to become involved with the Boy Scouts of America. Mentoring young men and giving direction to them gave Smokey great joy. But it wasn't enough. He truly believed that the Boy Scout Creed should live well beyond himself. He was not only a great Scoutmaster for Troop 210 in Southampton MA., but a well respected and admired Board of Directors Member who wore many hats in the Great Trails and Pioneer Valley Councils. Smokey was the recipient of the Silver Beaver Award. One of the highest awards one could be bestowed from the Boy Scouts. He served with pride for 50 joy filled years. Town politics also took up a large amount of his time. Richard sat on many boards for the town of Southampton and would even give advice when other board members would call to see where he stood on issues. Everything Rich did was based on his personal faith. Whether it was being on the town boards or the Boy Scouts of America, it all came back to faith. The reason this country was founded. Richard was a member of the Southampton Congregational Church for many years and was also a member of the St. Peters Lutheran Church in Holyoke. Mr. Vollert also found enjoyment later on in life by watching NASCAR. He will be missed for his sense of humor and his fun loving personality.

In September of 2000 Richard took vows to marry Donna L. (Smith). He never thought he would marry until he met Donna. She made life exciting, fun and brought meaning to his life. There wedding took place on a private, picture perfect pond in Southampton with close friends and family to share this special time. They were married almost eight wonderful years before he passed.

Richard leaves behind his wife Donna L. (Smith) of Winchester. A son, Richard A. Waite and his wife Tracy of Winchester. Three Grandchildren, Molly and Irena on Winchester and Nathan of Hadley, Ma. He also leaves a sister, Phyllis Cox and her husband James of Hamilton, Alabama.

A memorial and dedication service will be held in June at the Camp Chesterfield Boy Scout Reservation in Chesterfield, MA. The Boy Scouts of America will name a lodge in his honor for many years of unselfish service. A private burial will take place at Center Cemetery in Southampton MA. Timothy John Alexander

Timothy John Alexander 40 of West Swanzey died early Wednesday morning after a long period of illness. He passed with the presence of his family at his side, with dignity and in comforting surroundings.

Tim was born the son of Leon (Bob) C. and Phyllis I. (Jantti) Alexander, In Keene on July 30th 1967.  He was educated in the Swanzey School system and graduated from Monadnock Regional High School class of 1986.

While still in High School Tim worked for the Alexander's Sheet Metal Inc. This family owned business gave Tim the skills to prove himself as a heating and air conditioning sheet metal fabricator. He worked with his family for 20 years. Prior to taking ill Tim was employed by the Melanson Company as a sheet metal fabricator. Tim has worked for them for the past six years.

On July 8th., 1989 Tim married Melissa A. Underwood at the Cathedral of the Pines Church in Ringe. They had hoped to grow old together. She was the one that made him whole. The built a home in West Swanzey where they would raise 2 children.

Tim enjoyed life. He enjoyed following NASCAR in his younger years and was a competitive mud bog racer. He raced all over New England. As time moved on and he became a father his values changed. It was time to be a father and a mentor. So he suspended some of the things he liked to do to share life and interests with his sons. They were the focus of his life and he wanted to be the super dad. He really enjoyed sports with his boys especially baseball and soccer. He even took the reigns of the Swanzey Lions Club Soccer League as the Director and Coach. As his boys grew athletically they all became interested in Lacrosse and he proudly cheered them on from the sidelines.. Tim also enjoyed remote control racing and was a 10 year member of the Keene RC Racers Club. He also liked to camp and fish with the family. Whether it was going to games, coaching or directing programs, camping, he enjoyed doing this with his family.

Mr. Alexander is survived by his wife of 18 years Melissa A. (Underwood) Alexander. Two devoted sons, Nicholas T. and Christopher J. Alexander at home. His parents Leon (Bob) C. and Phyllis I. (Jantti) Alexander of West Swanzey. Two brothers Leon (Beef) Alexander IV and his wife Julie of West Swanzey. Kirk J. Alexander and his long time girlfriend Judi Smith of West Swanzey. Three grandmothers, Blanche Jantti of West Swanzey, Patricia Alexander of Sullivan and Alice Patterson of Winchester. Tim is pre-deceased by his grandfathers Emil Jantti and Leon C. Alexander Jr. He also leaves 9 nieces and nephews, Stephanie and Stacie Alexander, Zacharie, Cole and Ethan Jarvis, Kristina Kyle, Quinn Underwood, Daniel and Tasha Smith and one great-nephew Hayden Paquette. Several Aunts, Uncles and Cousins.

Services will be held on Saturday morning at 10am. Calling hours will be on Friday from 5 to 8pm. all in the funeral home. Burial will take place in the spring.. Flowers will gladly be accepted. Betty Jane Day

Betty Jane Day 64 Died on March 1st. after a period of illness at her home in East Swanzey. She passed peacefully with dignity and the compassion of her family at her side.

She was born in Keene on August 10, 1943 the daughter of Charles and Ruth (Barrett) Stowell. Betty was educated in the Keene school system. She has spent all of her life in Cheshire County between Keene and Swanzey.

Mrs. Day worked for over 40 years as a waitress and hostess. She worked for the Christmas Tree Inn and she also worked for the Red Roof Restaurant for many years. She retired in 1996.

On July 23rd 1960 she took the hand of Frank Day in Keene. They were married for 47 years before she passed.

Betty loved life and people but mostly she loved her family. Her life was full of friends and laughter. She also enjoyed bowling. Mrs. Day liked to take care of kids, she gave daycare to many a child as a young woman. Lets not forget the animal lover in her. All kinds of animals especially those that were ill or injured. She always found room in her heart to help them.

Mrs. Day is survived by her husband Frank and three children all who live locally. Tim A. Day and his wife Bonnie of Gilsum, Terri A. (Day) Caron of North Swanzey and Torie A. (Day) and Wayne Lechlider of Swanzey Center. She also leaves five grandchildren, Mandi Day, Nicholas and Tia Caron, Ashley and Madison Lechlider. There are 2 Great grandchildren Jena and Trey Caron. Betty was one of four children She is predeceased by her siblings, William Stowell, Brenda (Stowell) Davis and Gail (Stowell) Cooke. Mrs. Day will be re-united in death with her daughter Tracey who passed in 1986.

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday at 11am. in the Funeral Home.. Pastor Pam Spain of the Swanzey Congregational Church will officiate. A gathering of friendship and fellowship will follow at the Friendship Hall, 679 Old Homestead Highway, Swanzey Center. All who knew Betty are encouraged to attend. Donations in Betty J. Stephen Dominic Seroka

Stephen Dominic Seroka 85 of Winchester died on February 17th. in peace. He passed after a period of illness at Harbourside Applewood Nursing and Rehabilitative Care Center in Winchester.

Stephen was born on July 6th. 1922 the son of Peter and Joanna (Napierkoski) Seroka in Winchester. He was educated in the local schools living in Winchester all his life.

In December of 1943 Stephen enlisted in the U.S. Army during WWII. He was an infantryman in the European Theater. While on active duty he received the European Campaign Award, Good Conduct Ribbon and One Battle Star. He completed his enlistment in 1946 as a Private First Class before returning home to civilian life.

Mr. Seroka worked for forty years at the New England Box Company in Winchester. He was a man who liked to work with his hands and was a wooden box maker. He retired in 1984.

Stephen was a practicing Catholic all the way up to the day he passed. He was a member of Queen of Peace Roman Catholic Church in Winchester. His faith was very important to him. He was a member of the Catholic Society for more than 50 years. Being a patriotic military man, he was a 60 year charter member of the Winchester Veterans of Foreign War Post #3968. Stephen was also an avid fisherman in his younger years and loved to play bingo.

Mr. Seroka never married and had no children. He leaves behind  his brother Joseph Zabielski and his wife Rosamond and one sister Cecilia Chesbro and her husband Robert of North Adams MA. and Boynton Beach FL. He is predeceased by his three siblings John Zabielski, Sophia Boyd, and Chester Seroka. He also leaves several nieces and nephews.

All services will be held in the spring with a catholic mass at Mary Queen of Peace Roman Catholic Church in Winchester. A liturgy of Christian burial will take place immediately following with full military honors. A date and time will be announced latter. All are encouraged to participate. Irene J. (Darby) Whitcomb

Irene J. (Darby) Whitcomb 85 of East Swanzey died peacefully on Saturday evening at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Keene after a period of decline.

Irene was born the daughter of Clark L. and Laura J. ( Johnson) Darby on February 23rd. 1923 in Keene, NH. She was educated in the Keene school system. She spent part of her childhood in Woodstock VT. and her young adult years in Keene. Irene has been a resident of East Swanzey for the past 55 years.

Mrs. Whitcomb worked for 20 years as a house keeper on the Brown Farm prior to retirement. Before that she was the personal house keeper for Dr. Debold and his family. She enjoyed being with them and worked for them for 18 years.

On March 6th. 1941 she took the hand of Louis R. Whitcomb Sr. In Bridgewater, VT. They were married for 46 years before Louis passed in 1987.

Irene was a caring, giving person. She was the kind of grandmother everyone should have. She took the kids and grand kids out for ice cream or shopping. As the grand kids got older she would send them care packages at college. She would even help out with books, tuition or just a little spending money.

She leaves behind six children. Louis R. and Janice Whitcomb of Grantham, NH., Rodney Whitcomb and his partner Barbara Brockway of East Swanzey, Bruce and his wife Pamela Whitcomb of Swanzey Center, David Whitcomb of East Swanzey and Janet Bixby (Whitcomb) and her husband Greg of West Swanzey. She also leaves behind a sister, Dorothy Butterfield of Gardner, MA. She is pre-deceased by a brother, Roy Derby who died in 1976 in Keene.
She has eight devoted grand-children, Ronald, Kathleen, Laura Jean and Adam Whitcomb, Wendy Jo Hardy, Lynn Little, Matthew and Mark Bixby. There are also 6 great Grandchildren who will not be able to experience the specialness that Irene brought to the family. Irene has also left a friend for life, Marion Plante. They have been friends for over 60 years.

Calling hours will be held on Wednesday from 1 to 3pm. A celebration of life will commence at 3pm. Burial will take place this spring in the family lot at Mountain View Cemetery in Swanzey Center where she will be re-united with her husband and son Brian Whitcomb who passed on March 26th. 2002. All are encouraged to attend services. Flowers will gladly be accepted by the family. However, if one would prefer they may make a donation in the name of Irene Whitcomb to the East Swanzey Rescue Unit at P.O. Box 10009 Swanzey, NH. 03446. Rhonda Jean (Ward) Frazier
